Driving from Bethel to Akiak, Alaska on the Kuskokwim River, also known as the "Ice Road". Because there are no roads connecting any of the villages of western Alaska, all travel is done either by small airplane or on the river. In the summer, primary travel is by boat, but in the winter...you wait for the river to freeze up and that becomes the way to get around. These photos show what the village was like, the people who taught and supported the school, and many landscape shots. Many of the pictures were contributed by Adam Farabee and Claire Andryshak. The music is "World On Fire," by Sarah McLachlan and "You Made It," by DJ Shadow (featuring Chris James). These songs set the tone for the experience I had my first year of teaching in the Alaskan Bush.
