Pebble Earthquakes

I presented my critique of a seismic hazard assessment for the proposed Pebble Mine at the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Conference in Dillingham Alaska on March 31. The presentation describes my concerns with this seismic hazard assessment, which misrepresents the scientific literature, employs implausible scientific arguments, and draws the optimistic conclusion that earthquakes pose little hazard to Pebble Mine. The video quality isn't very good and you can't see the slides, but the audio is decent, and even without the slides many of my points should be fairly clear.

Pebble Earthquakes

On March 31st 2012 I presented my critique of Pebble Limited Partnership's (PLP's) seismic hazards assessment at the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Conference in Dillingham, Alaska. The video has some issues, but the audio is pretty decent. In this presentation I conclude that PLP's assessment is crucially flawed. They misrepresent the scientific literature, use bizarre and unsupported scientific reasoning, fail to analyze their own data, and yet draw a strong and optimistic conclusion that earthquakes pose little danger. This is more than an academic concern - PLP's seismic hazard assessment provides the basis for mine engineering, and if this assessment is wrong then tailings dams and other facilities could fail during earthquakes. Or if problems with the assessment are recognized late in the engineering process this could result in large unexpected capital cost increases as facilities are redesigned to withstand stronger shaking.

NBC Nightly News Report - Stevens Plane Crash

On an ordinary Monday night, we began getting word that a small plane had crashed near the tiny town of Dillingham, AK. What's worse, we had heard from several reliable sources that former US Senator Ted Stevens was on board. I stayed at the station through the late newscast, into the early hours of the following morning, calling people to confirm who was on board. My station counted on me to fly to Dillingham with a photographer the next morning, as the eyes of the nation were fixed on the small village. That day, I did several live shots with NBC's Today Show, MSNBC and NBC Nightly News.
