in october, i left chicago on a thursday morning, flew into anchorage, drove five hours to the southwestern tip of homer, alaska, and then drove back to anchorage, caught a plane to nome just at the arctic circle and then flew back to anchorage and back to chicago in time for sunday luncheon. all so i could visit two facebook friends in alaska!

The Window Cranes at Inspiration Ridge Preserve in Homer, Alaska, are having a tough nesting season. May 13, after a heavy, wet, snow squall, the pair both flew up to the house and then departed for the evening toward their traditional roost. At 6 am the next morning, they were in their usual in front of the window. Finally, by 7:30 am when their human neighbors got up for the day, they had left the window. Checking the nest later revealed that they had returned to the nest and were again incubating the eggs.
