Native Leader Al Ketzler, Sr. of Nenana, Alaska speaks at Tanana Chiefs Conference's 2012 Annual Convention. That year TCC celebrated it's 50th year with the theme "50 years: Honor the Past, Embrace the Present, and Dream the Future". In 1959 Alaska officially became a part of the United States, and although the Alaska Statehood Act recognized native land rights, the state began planning as though it did not by making two plans that were of particular concern. One was to build a road to the Minto Lakes and the other was the Rampart Dam project. This threat to native land inspired a remarkable array of young, educated Native leaders to began pushing the land claims toward a suitable outcome. One of the first was Al Ketzler, Sr. of Nenana. He helped organize a meeting of 32 villages at Tanana in June 1962. Out of this meeting the Tanana Chiefs Conference was incorporated and Ketzler served as it's first President from 1963-64 and again from 1968-72.
