It’s kind of like visiting the Humane Society and rescuing a pet who desperately needs a home. On Saturday, February 18, Keep Birmingham Beautiful will sponsor the 20th Annual Plant Dig at the New Georgia Landfill. These native plants desperately need to be rescued and find new homes because more space is needed for a landfill, and you are invited! In this “two-classes-in-one” seminar, first you will see a Power Point and learn about some of the most common plants that live in this area including fern, hydrangea, dogwood, red bud, Hearts-a-Bustin, wild ginger, trillium, American Beech to name a few. Second, you will learn from the experts how to prepare a plant for digging and transplanting including pruning for form and root care in order to sustain it, so it will thrive in its new environment in your home landscape. Therefore, please join us the week prior to the Plant Dig to learn all the details about identifying, digging, and transplanting some new natives in your garden! More information and directions to the dig site will be available during class.
