Plan would move Birmingham inmates to JeffCo jail

Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale said Thursday that the county would reopen a jail in Bessemer and Birmingham would move all its jail inmates into a county jail under an informal agreement between city officials and the county. According to the Birmingham News, Hale said Jefferson County would move about 400 county inmates, including about 200 people who have family in Bessemer, from the 1,040-bed county jail in Birmingham to the 410-bed Bessemer jail, which the county closed in 2009 to cut costs...
