Após cumprir 4 anos ele entra com um pedido de liberdade condicional, que lhe é negado. Isto o deixa desesperado, assim quando recebe a visita de sua mulher, Carol Ainsley McCoy (Ali MacGraw), pede que ela procure Jack Beynon (Ben Johnson), um dos membros da junta de liberdade condicional, e diga-lhe que "Doc" está à venda pelo preço que ele estipular. Carol garante a liberdade de "Doc", com a condição que Carter faça um "trabalho" para Jack. Rapidamente a junta altera sua decisão. "Doc" é libertado e logo se encontra com Jack, que diz que ele roubará um pequeno banco em Beacon City, Texas, mas renderá US$ 500 mil, pois uma companhia petrolífera faz lá seus depósitos. Jack contratou dois profissionais: Rudy Butler (Al Lettieri) e Frank Jackson (Bo Hopkins) e impõe que Carter trabalhe com eles. Carol participa apenas ajudando no planejamento e, no dia do assalto, é a motorista. Mas nem tudo corre como o planejado e Frank deixa que lhe vejam o rosto durante o assalto. Em razão disto Rudy o mata e tenta fazer o mesmo com Doc, para ficar com todo o dinheiro, mas é ele quem o atinge.
