Born in Gainesville, Alabama, United States, the son of sharecroppers and one of four children. He was born, raised and worked on a farm, and picked up and learned the harmonica at 12 years of age. Coleman began performing the blues as an entertainer for American soldiers while serving in the United States Army. Antebellum Architecture, Gainesville, AL 04:07

It had one of the first banks in the state that issued currency and was a major port, shipping 6000 bales of cotton to Mobile each year by steamboats on the Tombigbee River. Many of the homes from Gainesville's "boom" days are still standing and though some have been restored, many, sadly, are falling into ruin. If you are in or near Sumter Co., AL, a visit to this little town of 220 is well worth the trip. It is truly a visit to the past...a fading, but still tangible memory of the antebellum South.
