Created in 1854, the Talladega County School System was formed by people of Talladega County who believed in education. The system employs approximately 1009 personnel with more than half comprising the instructional team. Others work in student support services to transport students to school safely, serve nutritious meals, provide community school programs, and maintain a clean, safe environment for learning.
Principals function as the instructional leader of the schools with an emphasis on local decision making. Teachers, support personnel, and administrators are carefully chosen. The school system employs only the most capable personnel to ensure outstanding school programs. Most teachers have a master degree and some principals hold an earned doctoral degree. High quality support staff is one characteristic of our first rate school system. Counselors, media specialists, career/technical teachers, special education teachers, instructional assistants, resource teachers support the students and work as a team to help children achieve their goals. Specialists in art, physical education, and computer instruction are employed in the schools.
The Talladega County Teacher Center provides teachers and parents educational resources and hosts numerous staff development activities. Also, the Genesis Alternative School is available for students with special needs and talents.
Teachers in Talladega County have received a variety of honors. They have been recipients of the State Teacher of the Year Award, Outstanding Teacher in the State of Alabama, Jacksonville State Hall of Fame, and the Golden Apple Teacher Award.
Grants are frequently awarded to innovative teachers by corporations and the Alabama Department of Education. Consistent with ambitious educational objectives, class sizes are small. The pupil-teacher ratio averages twenty-two to one. In the two Child Development Centers, the ratio is much smaller.
