Spring Hill School History:

In 1835 the Reverend A. R. Banks came on mission to Arkansas and settled in Spring Hill where he pastored the Spring Hill Presbyterian Church. In 1836 the Spring Hill Female Academy was formed. The academy was housed in a brown brick building and accommodated about fifty students.

The Spring Hill Male Academy was founded in 1838 under the direction of W. C. Hammer. The brown building which housed the Male Academy was located near the center of Spring Hill, some distance from the Female Academy. The Spring Hill Female and Male Academies were incorporated into a single unit in 1844. Shortly after this time, the academy closed.

According to records, the public school has occupied several buildings. During the late 1800's up to the 1920's, a two-story building was located at the end of Foley Lane. This building burned in 1923 and a smaller building was built. Three downstairs rooms were used as classrooms. In later years, this school was torn down.

The present high school was built in 1928 and originally contained the fourth through twelfth grades. The first gymnasium was built in 1940.

A cafeteria/home economics building was constructed in 1946 and an agriculture building was built in 1947. A new cafeteria/home economics building was constructed in 1977. Renovations were made in the main high school building during the 1980's to insulate, air condition, and upgrade facilities for modern technological equipment. The present gymnasium was built in 1992.

A Special Education building, located on the northeast side of the elementary campus, was purchased in 1994.  New science classrooms with a modern lab were completed in 1994. A new main high school building was built a few years ago and the old high school building remodeled. In the summer of 2004, a new technology building was added to the high school campus.

The tech building has two computer labs, a digital video/annual room, and a compressed interactive video distance learning class. The tech building also doubles as a storm shelter. At the same time the old classrooms located in the gym were converted to weight rooms, locker rooms, and a coach's office. The athletic complex behind the gym includes football, softball, and baseball fields that were completed in 2004.

The Spring Hill School is located in part of the southwest quarter of Section 25, Township 13S, Range 25W, containing 8.63 acres. The Spring Hill District covers a seventy-one mile area in southern Hempstead County.
