Public Places - Personal Spaces

Public Places/Personal Spaces is a selection of artwork from the MCA Permanent Collection that speak of special spaces that seem to offer a sense of privacy, secrecy, enclosure, protection, a sense of home or even intimacy.

Public places as well as more private spaces may allow a physical or mental retreat through anonymity. Phrases like “One of many” and “Safety in numbers” are well-known in our culture. Even a memory may grant escape from the place and time where one’s body physically exists. A mental retreat to a favorite location can offer comfort and peace, even when physical escape is not possible.
