Phoenix Fire Suggests Home and Life Safety Gifts!

from:City Of Phoenix category:Government and Politics posted:December 18th, 2009
Phoenix, AZ -- Are you having trouble finding the perfect gift for someone? Maybe it’s the person who “already has everything,” a new neighbor, or a hard-to-shop-for relative. The Phoenix Fire Department has some great gift suggestions that can be found at most home repair, hardware or discount department stores. To arrange for an interview on what to buy for this special gift pack, contact the On Duty PIO at (602) 201-9716. He will have a gift basket with the items listed below to shoot for B-roll.

Smoke Alarms with New Batteries
In three out of ten reported fires in homes equipped with smoke alarms, the devices did not work. Remember, smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years and fresh batteries should be installed once a year. Test those batteries once a month. ($20 - $30)

Carbon Monoxide Detector
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and toxic gas that can be produced by any fuel burning appliance, vehicle, tool or other device. Local stores now stock Carbon Monoxide detectors that can make you aware of the presence of that danger in your home. CO detectors can help minimize the potential for exposure to the deadly gas. ($20 - $30)

Fire Extinguishers
A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives. ($10 - $60)

CPR Lessons
Call the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association at (602) 277-1500 to arrange to take CPR lessons.

Outlet Covers
Those little fingers can get about anywhere. Cover your outlets to avoid electric shock.

Cupboard Locks
Baby proof your home with the use of cupboard locks. Pay special attention to areas where you keep medication and cleaning supplies.

Bicycle Helmets
Bicycle helmets are always a good purchase, especially if you are giving new bicycles to your family members.
