Thrillers, broadly defined, are perhaps the most popular and lucrative of all the genres for commercial fiction authors. This course is a practical introduction to writing thriller novels, and will give the student concrete experience in devising a thriller plot, building a workable outline, and generating a first chapter. Agents and editors have long observed that while many aspiring writers are able to handle language, atmosphere, and character, they still cannot produce a coherent and engaging story. Learning the art of incorporating story ideas into a thriller plot and fleshing it out with detail through practical exercises in class will be the primary purpose of this workshop.

Michael Gruber, author of "The Book of Air and Shadows" and "The Forgery of Venus" has over ten million books in print. Several of his novels have appeared on the New York Times Best-Seller list. His most recent novel is "The Good Son".
