To celebrate Earth Day, the Public Works Department is hosting a “City Residential Refuse Customer Appreciation Day”

The City is once again able to help residents properly dispose of e-trash (computers, monitors, etc.), car batteries, tires, appliances, compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs), old cooking oil, and other items.  Here’s how to take advantage of these great opportunities…it’s as easy as 1-2-3:

Step 1: Visit the Pedro Castro Government Maintenance Center (PCC) located at 401 Giulio Cesare Avenue anytime between 8:00 a.m. and noon and check in with a member of the Public Works staff (don’t forget to bring your sewer/sanitation bill).

Step 2: A Public Works representative will direct you where the drop off points are for your materials.

Step 3: Stop by the Public Works information tent for refreshments and to find out more about the programs and services Public Works offers.

For faster service, make sure to bring a copy of your sewer/sanitation bill and have your items pre-sorted.

Compact florescent light bulbs need to be in a sealed plastic baggie and appliances need to be certified and have a tag indicating they are “Freon Free, which can be done through any local appliance dealer.  Cooking oil needs to be in a sealed plastic container or coffee can.

Material limits per household:
Two (2) car batteries
Five (5) tires (without rims)
Three (3) appliances (with certified “Freon Free” Tag)
Five (5) gallons of cooking oil (Grease Recycling)
Materials not accepted:
Motor Oil
Hazardous Materials (except Household Hazardous Waste)

The City encourages area residents to participate in paint recycling by donating any color of old latex paint. Public Works is putting the paint to good use by remixing and reusing the paint as part of the City’s Graffiti Abatement program. By donating paint, area residents are helping to rid the City of unsightly graffiti. Paint donations are accepted year-round at the PCC, and residents are urged to report graffiti any time through the City’s graffiti hotline number, 452-7017.

City residents are urged to take advantage of these great opportunities to clean up their homes and yards and to properly recycle their old computers and other consumables. For more information, call Public Works at 458-5775.
