Film Temporarily Banned in Mexico! Presunto Culpable (Presumed Guilty) Dir. Roberto Hernández (Mexico, 2010) 90min. Mexican lawyers Hernández and Negrete researched Mexico City’s criminal justice system only to discover some astounding facts: 95% of verdicts are convictions; 92% of convictions are not based on physical evidence; and 93% of inmates are never shown an arrest warrant. To publicize their findings, they joined with filmmaker Geoffrey Smith and produced Presunto Culpable (Presumed Guilty), a documentary of their efforts to exonerate a man sentenced to 20 years for homicide with no physical evidence. In Spanish with English subtitles, the film is a first peek into the horrors of a justice system that essentially presumes guilt. 7:30pm $10 gen.
