Opera Show
date:Monday, October 13, 2008 time:1:10 PM to 3:00 PM venue:College of Marin address:835 College Ave. Greenbrae, CA 94904 View map from:Golden Gate Opera
No opera lover should be without experiencing the double-bill of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana combined with Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci.
But after the death scenes, it’s time for comedy and love, both based on Shakespeare: Nicolai’s Merry Wives of Windsor and Verdi’s, Falstaff. We’ll compare the two operas based on the same story to show how they worked in the composition, why the composers used what they used. And finally the romance of Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette.
We will enjoy each opera, identifying favorite selections and learning a bit about the composers and their approach to adapting the Shakespearian masterpieces to the operatic medium.
Optional texts will be discussed in class.
Roberta Becker has led the Golden Gate Opera company since 1994.
