StandUp For Kids is “going green” and spreading awareness in the community about youth homelessness by having an activities-filled recycling event at Placentia’s Tri-City Park on Saturday, November
15 from 3 to 6:30 p.m..
Every day throughout the US, 13 kids die
on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics OrangeCounty
has up to 16,000 homeless kids living on the streets at any given time. These
kids are the forgotten members of our society struggling every day just to survive.
StandUp For Kids,
OrangeCounty is kicking off National Homeless
Youth Awareness Month with their “Go Green for Youth Homelessness” campaign by
collecting your used bottles, cans and cell phones to raise funds to support
its outreach programs and facilities. The event is intended to provide an
opportunity for children and families to gather and learn about the importance
of recycling and also gain awareness of homeless youth in their community.
Everyone will be welcome to
come and donate their recyclables – empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans,
and even a cell phone drive will be held to refurbish and distribute to the
homeless kids. At the event, guests may participate in some friendly
competition like a pie eating contest, musical chairs, and water balloon toss
to win special prizes, from which have been donated from supporting companies.
The evening will end with the
Cell Phone Illumination Ceremony – a 13-second long moment of silence to
commemorate the 13 homeless youth who die every day in the United States. Everyone will be
asked to gather together at 6:13 p.m. and hold up their lighted cell phones in
the air for a striking visual, demonstrating a unison of advocates to help stop
youth homelessness.
Donation boxes, a volunteer
sign-up booth, and information table will also be at the event for anyone
interested in supporting StandUp For Kids.
