The first concert will be held  at 142Throckmorton Theatre, located in downtown Mill Valley. The program is repeated in the San Francisco Veterans War Memorial, Green Room, 401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. Tickets are sold at the door for $15, seniors/students, and $20, general admission. For more information, call (415) 642-8054 or visit www.leftcoastensemble.org. The concerts are supported in part by a special grant from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music.

The centerpiece of the concert is Schubert’s justly celebrated Trout Quintet composed for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  The quintet’s nickname derives from the fourth movement of the work, which borrows its theme from “Die Forelle,” (“The Trout”) a dramatic Schubert song. Italian music critic and historian Massimo Mila referred to “The Trout” as a "holiday poem" that reflects Schubert's fondness for pastoral life, "in it is enshrined the memory of a delightful summer, of carefree leisure days; the music is bathed in sunshine and the spirit of youth, ... friendship and humanity woven into the very texture of the music." Contemporary composers Eric Wubbels and Yu-Hui Chang have written new works as companion pieces to the Schubert. The two works, commissioned by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, receive their world premieres at these performances.

About The Contemporary Composers

Yu-Hui Chang, a native of Taiwan, has been recognized through awards and grants from the Aaron Copland Award, Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University, Yoshiro Irino Memorial Prize, American Composers Forum, Meet the Composers, ASCAP, and most recently, the Koussevitsky Commissioning Grant.  A gifted pianist and teacher, she is currently on the faculty at Brandeis University. Using a decidedly contemporary language of diverse harmonic color, inventive timbre and ingenious effects, Chang creates music that resonates with musicians and audiences alike.

Eric Wubbels is a New York-based composer and performer. He is Executive Director, pianist, and a composer member of the Wet Ink Ensemble, an ensemble devoted to experimental and contemporary music in New York. Wubbels’ music has been presented at concerts and festivals in Europe, Asia and the U.S. He has received performances and commissions from ensembles in Europe and the United States as well as Asia and grants from the Argosy Foundation Fund for Contemporary Music, among others. A pianist and accordionist, Wubbels is currently completing his D.M.A. in composition at Columbia University.
