Bystander Killed in Drive-By Shooting

MODESTO, CA – An innocent bystander was struck by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting yesterday evening in Modesto.  The 43-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital where he later died during surgery. 

The incident occurred at about 7:30 pm.  The victim, Chanthol Ouk of Long Beach, was in Modesto visiting relatives during the Cambodian New Year celebration.  Minutes before the shooting occurred, two groups of Asian males were arguing near a store on the corner of Paradise Road and Chicago Avenue.  The two groups separated and one group began to walk down Chicago Avenue.  The other group got into a car and began shooting at the males they had been arguing with.  Ouk was outside and was struck by a stray bullet. 

Investigators worked through the night gathering information and looking for witnesses.  At this time it appears that Ouk was the only person shot during the incident.  Detectives believe the two groups of males were possibly rival gangs but have not confirmed this information.  Officers at the scene said there were many other families outside celebrating at the time of the shooting.
