Modesto, CA – The
Modesto Police
Department’s Traffic Unit will be conducting two separate sobriety and driver’s
license checkpoints during the month of February. The first checkpoint
will be held on Friday February 22nd, 2008 and the second checkpoint will be
held one week later on Friday February 29th, 2008. Each checkpoint will be
held at an undisclosed location within the city limits of Modesto.
The checkpoint will consist of a
minimum of 8 police officers and one sergeant from the Modesto Police
Department. The goal of this checkpoint will be to enforce all traffic
laws with a specific emphasis on all alcohol related
offenses.
This special enforcement effort is
made possible by a grant from the California office of Traffic safety through
the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency. The Modesto Police
Department received the grant of one million dollars in October of 2006.
The grant project titled, “Selective Traffic Enforcement Program”, is an effort
to reduce the number of injures and deaths in the Modesto area caused by those who choose to
drive under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs.
“Although the Holiday season has past, the Modesto Police Department
still makes impaired driving enforcement a priority. We want to make
Modesto roadways
safe and secure for all who travel them. If you are caught driving while
impaired by alcohol or drugs, you will be arrested”, said Officer Daniel Starr
who is assigned to the Modesto Police Department’s DUI Task
Force.
