OUSD to Host Citywide Elementary Math Contest

20 award-winning Oakland third graders to take part in OUSD Math Facts Competition at Lafayette Elementary

Oakland –
Twenty of OUSD’s most promising math students will match wits on Friday, December 12 when they take part in the 1st Annual Swun Math/OUSD Math Facts Competition. Hosted at Lafayette Elementary (1700 Market St. Oakland, CA 94607), from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the event features one third grade student from each of the twenty Oakland Unified schools using the Swun Math curriculum.

Swun math schools devote an additional 30 minutes of instructional time each day to essential math skills using lessons plans called “Beyond the Basic Facts”. Each participating third grader won the “Beyond the Basic Facts” tournament at their school site in order to advance to the district finals.

“In recent years, our elementary students have made remarkable gains in math proficiency,” said OUSD Chief Academic Officer Brad Stam. “That’s a credit to the hard work of the students and their instructors and also reflects well on the impact of new programs such as Swun Math, whose expansion has coincided with this improved performance. In particular, we have identified Swun Math as a key component in moving greater numbers of African-American, Latino and English Language Learner students toward proficiency and in the process, helping to close the achievement gap.”

Competitors will strive to show the greatest mastery of multiplication tables and word problems, working within time constraints ranging from 5 seconds to 35 seconds, depending on the nature of the question. The event is similar to a spelling bee in some respects, but different in that all competitors who have not been eliminated will answer questions at the same time, rather than individually.

Si Swun, the creator of Swun Math, will be present at the competition as will Heidi Boley, OUSD’s K-12

Manager of Mathematics and Sean Nakagawa, who has helped lead the District’s implementation of the program. Awards will be given to both the competitors and the schools they represent and alternates from all competing school sites will be in attendance.
