EDAC Art Newsletter – July 2008

ARTS: CONNECTION
By Deb Jensen, EDAC Executive Director djensen@eldoradoartscouncil.org
When you think of economics, do you think about art? Everywhere I turn lately, there is economic news, mostly dire fare. But, let's check in on some good news. In spite of soaring gasoline prices, a couple of local arts events of which I have first hand knowledge (El Dorado Hills Art & Wine Affaire and Coloma Blues Live!) experienced record attendance and revenue. Gallery 4 on Main Street in Placerville celebrated its 1st anniversary and joins Gold Country Artists and other Main Street galleries to draw arts patrons from throughout the region to Third Saturday ArtWalk. The El Dorado County Farm Bureau, Ag in the Classroom, and EDAC are teaming up to produce an accessible art family event: Art in the Orchard on September 20 at Rainbow Orchards in Camino. On August 9th, EDAC and David Girard Vineyards offer Shana Morrison in Concert, www.eldoradoartscouncil.org/events. A common aspect of these local examples is that all involve partnership and collaboration. And, the arts.
Imagination - the source of artistic creativity - can and does drive innovation. In a crazy economy, innovation seems paramount for confronting serious issues. Here are two innovative ideas using technology: Have you visited www.etsy.com? The website has developed an online, international community of artists and artisans who connect with patrons via virtual galleries. I am a Shop Local fanatic so I was interested in the website's geolocator. Another website to visit is www.visit-eldorado.com, the beautifully upgraded and updated site for El Dorado County Visitors' Authority. This website represents a widely collaborative effort involving wineries, agriculture interests, bed and breakfast establishments, restaurants and hotels, recreational outdoor sports businesses, EDAC representing the arts, and others. Check out the calendar. This newsletter also offers a listing of arts events. Have a great summer filled with activity and the arts, right here, where we live!
COLOMA BLUES LIVE! ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT - THANKS TO YOU!
Thank you to everyone that supported EDAC by purchasing tickets to Coloma Blues Live! - another great success. The weather couldn't have been more perfect and the music was phenomenal.
The day began with the Curtis Salgado Band - a Northwest-music legend who delivered a powerful and soulful live performance to the fans at the 3rd Annual festival. Of course Albert Cummings wowed the crowd again with his screaming good guitar licks and impassioned vocals that moved fans to their feet. Roy Rogers - probably one of THE best slide guitarists ever - and you add in the Tommy Castro Band and of course - our headliner - Los Lobos - what can we say? It was quite a day.
Both Tommy and Los Lobos played longer than anticipated (or contracted) but they were having so much fun - and so was the crowd - that we just let them do their thing!
In the next few months the plans will get underway for the 4th Annual Coloma Blues Live! tentatively scheduled for the first Saturday in June 2009. In the meantime - A VERY special thanks to our sponsors who make this event possible: The County of El Dorado, Jackson Rancheria, Parker Development Company, El Dorado Savings Bank, Coors Light/Smirnoff Ice, Madrona Vineyards, The Eagle - 96.9, KXJZ, Comcast, Doug Veerkamp General Engineering, Diane Wilkinson Catering, Fergerson Financial, Cozmic Café, Make A Scene Video and Visible Ink Graphic Design. Please support these businesses. Thank you.
