One year ago, Theodore Cohen, the designer of TRANSFORMED BY FIRE, generously gave Mingei International Museum an unusual and marvelous collection of Chinese hat boxes, gathered by him over a number of years. Made of wood, lacquer, paper and leather, all are late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890-1912; and each one is different. Mostly similar in shape and size, there is among them still a rich diversity of form, texture and color. The collection is a striking example of variation on sameness and of a passionate collector’s refined eye that would know to amass not the grand hats of Chinese nobility but the quieter, serviceable yet profoundly beautiful boxes that held them. This out-of-the-ordinary collection invites each visitor to understand one aspect of mingei in recognizing art where it is unexpected.

Museum colleagues visiting recently from China asked whether we had planned the exhibition symbolically to recognize the fifty-six (some say fifty-seven) ethnic minorities in China. In fact, this is a coincidence – a most auspicious one.
