Rocky Mountain Quilt Musuem
Mission
The mission of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is to enrich the lives of people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures through the celebration of, education about, and preservation of the art and history of American quilts and quilt making, past and present.
About our Founder
Eugenia Mitchell was born in Brazil in 1903 where her parents, John and Theodora Mueller Hartmeister, were missionaries of the Lutheran Church. Upon their return to the States, Eugenia grew up as a "tom boy" in Storm Lake, Iowa. At that time she preferred climbing trees to quilting, but Eugenia's interest grew as her mother made quilts for the family.
Over the years, Eugenia became more involved with quilting, and she began purchasing quilts and quilt tops in second-hand and antique stores. She spread the word far and wide about quilts as history and art by giving trunk shows and programs to school children and various clubs and organizations throughout out the area.
Eugenia remained active well into her 90's. She is now in a nursing home in Missouri where she celebrated her 102nd birthday last fall.
