Begin advertising early; at least one to two weeks before the first day of the sale. Check local ordinances regarding signage, etc. Keep signs BIG and neatly lettered. Add some balloons to help attract attention to the sign. A well-organized sale is critical. Group similar items together. Make sure the space is clean and there’s enough room for people to browse. Have enough table space, plus grocery bags and newspaper to wrap sold items in. Keep an extension cord and power source handy for people to try out electrical appliances. Mow the grass and clear the driveway. Keep your money with you in a fanny pack; have plenty of small bills and loose change handy. A calculator is good to have, too. If you’re hitting several sales in a day, keep a small local map in the car. Wet-naps or hand sanitizer is also good to have if you’ve picked up something icky. Carry a tote or plastic bag with you so you don’t have to juggle several items in your hands. A box in the car also keeps your treasures from rolling around on your way to the next sale! Bring small bills and loose change; if you’ve haggled down the price from $1.00 to 50 cents, its tacky to pay for an item with a $20 bill. If you see something you want, but the price is too high and the seller won’t negotiate, leave them your business card and tell them you’d like to talk if it hasn’t sold by the end of the day (and they’re willing to come down on the price). |
