Fairfield University’s Summer Festival Chorus Performs - The Times They Are A-Changin

Fairfield, Conn - For the sixteenth year, Fairfield University’s Summer Festival Chorus takes to the Quick Center for the Arts’ stage under the baton of Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M. with special guest artists, Dr. Joseph Utterback on piano and baritone Edward Pleasant,  In homage to the activism of the 1960s and in tune with today’s political and societal changes, the concert, billed as “The Times They Are A-Changin,’” explores the music of pop icons and civil rights and anti-war activism.

Act I begins with Z. Randall Stroope’s arrangement of the text by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice for “Homeland,” an “Anthem for a Generation.”   Bob Dylan’s classic, “Blowin’ in the Wind” features the Quick Center’s Executive Director Tom Zingarelli as narrator, followed by “I Dream a World” by Andre Thomas with text by Langston Hughes.  “Dry Your Tears, Afrika” from “Amistad” by John Williams highlights the Bernard Dadie poem and concludes the program section, “Whisper in the Noise.”  A “Freedom Montage” arranged and sung by Pleasant calls out “Let Us March on till Victory is Won!” and “Song of Democracy” by Howard Hanson from a Walt Whitman poem read by Zingarelli ends Act I.

Dr. Maxwell celebrates the “Songs of a Generation” with “We Are the World” by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.  Soloists find the spotlight with a variety of songs and the concert ends with “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” from “Hair.”

With accompaniment by Beth Palmer and bass by Mike Nunno, the 2009 Summer Festival Chorus bids adieu to another season.
