Jazz Master McCoy Tyner Comes to Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts
from:Fairfield University category:Arts and Entertainment posted:October 3rd, 2008Fairfield, CT - Jazz Master McCoy Tyner joins the talented members of his quartet onstage at Fairfield University¹s Quick Center for the Arts.
Tyner¹s blues-based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists.
At 17 he began a career-changing relationship with Miles Davis¹ sideman, the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane. He joined Coltrane for the classic album ³My Favorite Things² (1960) and remained at the core of what became one of the most seminal groups in jazz history, The John Coltrane Quartet. During his five years with Coltrane, he performed on such classic recordings as ³Live at the Village Vanguard,² ³Impressions² and Coltrane¹s signature suite, ³A Love Supreme.²
He went on to compose, arrange and became a bandleader of note. His 1972 Grammy-award nomination album ³Sahara,² broke new ground with the sounds and rhythms of Africa. Over the years he has worked with a long list of artists including fellow Coltrane alumnus Elvin Jones, bassist Ron Carter, Michael Brecker and tap-dancer Savion Glover, to name a few.
He continues to grow and explore new musical directions and now records on the McCoy Tyner Music label. His latest and second CD on his own label, is entitled ³Guitars² and features the stellar rhythm section of Tyner, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette with four modern guitarists (and one banjo) of our time: Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, John Scofield, Derek Trucks and Bela Fleck.
