In celebration of the sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary of the Civil War, curators have organized an exhibition using costumes, decorative arts, and paintings illustrating reactions to the political and military conflict.

Paintings and decorative arts from the collection will be incorporated into the vignettes and used to narrate personal stories, such as the American Liberty Screen commissioned at the onset of the Civil War by the firearms manufacturer Samuel Colt, and the parlor memorial crafted by Eliza Trask in honor of her husband’s safe return. Most importantly, the display of ingeniously designed Colt firearms will ascribe Connecticut’s historic role in the Union’s survival and final outcome of the Civil War.
