Chicago’s Filament Theatre Ensemble is returning for another summer in residence at the Summer Theatre of New Canaan. Back after the 2008 success “Six Impossible Things,” Filament is casting for the production of “Pinocchio”-- an original folk musical—composed and adapted by Tyler Beattie. The play is a classic presentation described as at times funny, at times scary, at times sad and always full of imagination and the utmost sincerity.
The initial call is for the paid role of Gepetto, an adult male, late 20s and up, who plays the guitar. The audition is set for April 18 (Saturday) 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Conservatory of New Canaan, 237 Elm St. Candidates are asked to prepare: a monologue or story and a song of roughly 32 bars, preferably in the folk style, where you can accompany yourself on guitar. Rehearsals for the show begin June 20 in New Canaan. Performances: run Thursdays through Sundays, mornings/early afternoons June 26–July 12 with possible weekday morning workshops and a reading performance in New York City.
For the first time, Summer Theatre of New Canaan is producing its entire professional season in Waveny Park under a new open-air, weather-protected canopy. Melody Libonati is the artistic director. The season opens with Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” June 19-July 11 and extends through “Camelot” July 18-Aug. 2, supplemented by presentations by Theatre for a Young Audience, the “Pinocchio” folk musical June 26-July 11 and “Shakespeare for Kids” June 27, July 4 and July 11.
