Call for Artists
Yale University Properties, in partnership with Artspace, has an opportunity for one artist to do a site-specific window installation in a window space on Audubon Street in New Haven's arts & retail district. This window installation will be highly visible to the public 24 hours. There are three windows measuring approx. 79" x 79", which are located at 87 Audubon Street - see photograph of the site below. The run dates for this installation are approximate as the end date is contingent upon the space being leased. Installation could be set up immediately. The selected artist will receive a stipend for materials. Please send your proposal via e-mail to laurel@artspacenh.org by July 15th, 2008, or mail to Artspace, 50 Orange Street, New Haven CT 06511. And don't forget our current exhibitions, through August 9, 2008:
Pretty Things: Confronting Sensuousness An exhibition that explores the role of sensuousness in contemporary art. Ten artists employ diverse materials in innovative ways to entice us with artworks that project a seductive allure. While exploring the potential of rich colors, patterns, and surfaces, these works also promote unexpected encounters with subject matter that ranges from the attractions of consumer products to the realms of biography, science, and geopolitics. From Oliver Herring's intricately collaged Swan, to lingerie made of delicate printed paper by Cheryl Yun, to Grant Lincoln Johnston's paintings of sumptuously decorated cakes, to Phyllis Bramson's brightly colored, highly decorated "Floating World" paintings, there is sure to be something to seduce every viewer. Artists include Kelly Bigelow Becerra, Phyllis Bramson, Mia Brownell, Oliver Herring, Grant Lincoln Johnston, Joyce Kozloff, Jane Rainwater, Christi Rinklin, Benjamin Weiner and Cheryl Yun. Curated by Joy Pepe.
In Case of Loss Please Return to Paradise An installation by Fredo Conde On view in Gallery 3, Conde combines painting, drawing and sculpture to collectively form a narrative expressing Conde's disillusionment with the excesses of consumerism and his subsequent regression into escapism. Conde's mixed media installation built from DVDs, cardboard shipping boxes, spray paint and found objects, chronicles a fabricated utopia guarded from the advances of consumption and its inevitable demise.
Put Together
Last fall Jeffrey Walkowiak, Director of the Sara Meltzer Gallery in New York, visited over 400 artist studios during Artspace's City-Wide Open Studios Festival 2007. His selection of five artists articulate concurrent and relevant issues in today's artworld. Brian Huff's collection of collages, using segments from children's books and newspapers, look at the loss of innocence and inevitable nature of mortality. Phil Lique's large installation, consisting of assembled creatures constructed from building materials and found objects, illustrate the ongoing battle between the natural and man-made worlds. Kari Britta Lorensen's fabric, wax and steel sculptures address issues of the body, skin, gender and containment. Drew Nemetz, inspired by graffiti and pop art icons, has created his own visual language on the walls of the gallery, informed by the work of advertising, design and media imagery framed by ornate antique frames. Dorothy Powers addresses issues of gender and the body in a series of photographically based works inspired by the depiction of middle eastern woman in the media.
Things I've Seen
Student Curator Simeon Durham, of the Hyde Leadership Academy, selected the work of two artists from the Artspace Flatfile, Robert Knight and Andrew Hogan, for his exhibition, Things I've Seen. Robert Knight's colorful photographs playfully expose the personal space of the bedroom, creating a portrait of the person who lives there by capturing the objects contained in their most private space. Andrew Hogan pushes the standards of lighting practices in documentary photography in his series, 12 Images of New Haven at Dusk and After. Each photograph captures an intimate view of New Haven we rarely take time to notice, when the city is slowing down for the night.
