Matecumbe Historical Trust Corp
The Matecumbe Historical Trust is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the education, history & preservation of the Florida Keys. The Trust created the Heritage Monument Trail with markers & descriptive plaques located throughout the islands marking sites of historical interest. We have a colorful self-guided tour brochure mapping out the locations of the markers and a brief history of each location. We offer monthly lectures & programs open to the public and distribute quarterly newsletters. The Trust has a restored 9' cannon from the San Jose which is on display at First State Bank in the Tradewinds Plaza at mile marker 100. Irving Eyster, historian, worked for three years to acquire the Pacific Lighthouse now located at Founder's Park. We now have a Willy Roberts skiff on display at the Islamorada Fish Company in Islamorada. We are in the process of building the IRVING R. EYSTER MUSEUM OF FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY AND CONFERENCE CENTER to house the vast collections of artifacts, documents photographs, and memorabilia we have collected for over 60 years. Groundbreaking was in September of 2011 and Grand Opening is planned for the Spring of 2012. Anyone wishing to join the Matecumbe Historical Trust, or make a tax deductable donation is greatly appreciated. Please contact Irving Eyster, Historian, archeologist and President of the Matecumbe Historical Trust at 305-664-9504 or Barbara Edgar, secretary at 305-393-0940.
