Sunshine Skyway Bridgerunning time:01:24 added by:ronaldharr source: YouTubeThe Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a bridge spanning Tampa Bay, Florida, with a cable-stayed main span, and a total length of 21877 feet (4.1 miles or approximately 6.67 km).[4] It is part of I-275 (SR 93) and US 19 (SR 55), connecting St. Petersburg in Pinellas County and Terra Ceia in Manatee County, Florida, passing through Hillsborough County waters. Construction of the current bridge began in 1982, and the completed bridge was dedicated on February 7, 1987. The new bridge cost $244 million to build, and was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987. It replaced an older bridge constructed in 1954 and partly destroyed in a collision in 1980. It is constructed of steel and concrete. Steel cables clad in eighty-four nine-inch (229 mm) steel tubes (forty-two per pylon) along the center line of the bridge support the main span. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group (who also designed the popular Seven Mile Bridge), and built by the American Bridge Company. The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 in its special on the "Top 10 Bridges" in the World. The bridge is considered the "flag bridge" of Florida.[5]

At the time, the towns of Bradenton and Sarasota had little to offer the growing "alternative" youth crowd, so Drew pitched an idea to his boss. This notion soon turned into what was to be called, "Alternate Universe". Together with his then wife, Deana, and friends Andi Sumpter, Melissa Van Sant, and Cindi Johnson, he quickly put together this pilot show. The plan was to integrate local happenings, concert updates, cool interview locations, and intersperse them with alternative music videos (WAX TRAX artists were chosen for the program, but have been edited out for copyright purposes). The original running time was roughly 24 minutes. This new version is about 12 and a half. The video begins at the apartment of Andi, Melissa, and Cindi, where the décor was industrial and gothic in nature, and an easy place to film without any outside set decorations. It follows with a trip to Backstreets, a Sarasota gay club that would have an 'alternative' night on Mondays. Local legend and music promoter Tony Rifugiato is seen spinning discs as the DJ for the evening. Also included are some 1991 concert updates from local promoter, 'No Clubs'. The video ends with a fascinating interview with Lisa Smith, a disc jockey at WMNF 88.5 in Tampa, Florida, which was the first place to play real alternative music at the time.
