Space Coast Area Transit Sets Monthly Ridership Record
from:City Of Melbourne category:Government and Politics posted:May 13th, 2008COCOA, FL--According to preliminary Fixed Route ridership numbers, Space Coast Area Transit provided 104,200 passenger boardings in the month of April, the highest monthly ridership ever recorded.
Space Coast Area Transit ridership numbers continue an upward trend. Ridership has increased each month for the last 17 months. Total ridership is up 21.9% for Fiscal Year 2008.
The growth in ridership is attributed to several factors. Ridership is up on existing routes, with established customers using it more and new customers trying the system for the first time. Also, in March 2007, Space Coast Area Transit launched expanded evening and Saturday bus service. The expanded service includes Saturday service on all routes and service past 6:30 p.m. on 12 of the 14 routes and allows the passengers additional transportation options.
“We are beginning to see that bus service is a viable transportation option,” said Jim Liesenfelt, Transit Director. “Passengers are talking more and more about the high cost of gas and the ridership numbers reflect this. Also, our employees are working hard to keep buses on time and providing quality service to our customers.”
Space Coast Area Transit, a service of the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, operates 14 fixed bus routes throughout the county.
