Originally colonized in 1559, Pensacola, FL was the first European-inhabited settlement in what was destined to become the continental United States – thus, its nickname as “America’s First Settlement.” The name “Pensacola” derives from the Panzacola Indians who were living in the area at the time.
Its location, just south of the British colonies and near the dividing lines of French-owned Louisiana and Spanish Florida, resulted in constantly changing rulership throughout its history: governments who’ve controlled Pensacola include Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America and finally, the US.
Although it was explored in the early 1500’s by both Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto, its exposure to numerous hurricanes led some to believe that the area was too dangerous to settle. This belief lasted for over a century until the Spanish officially established Pensacola in 1696. It became the capital of the British colony of West Florida in 1763. Andrew Jackson captured the city during the war of 1812; it became part of the U.S. in 1821.
Located on the Florida panhandle, Pensacola is the site of the country’s first US Naval Air Station and home to the legendary Blue Angels flight demonstration team. It’s extraordinary white beaches make it a popular tourist destination, earning the nickname “The Redneck Riviera.”
