Elliott Museum Presents “A Circus of Small Wonders”

The Elliott Museum is bringing back a simpler time with its summer exhibition, “A Circus of Small Wonders.” The centerpiece of the exhibition is a hand carved circus, from the Elliott collection, consisting of thousands of figures, vehicles and pieces of equipment capturing the essence of the “Big Top” right down to the smallest detail. The excitement of the circus coming to town is encapsulated in an extraordinary display of folk art rarely seen today. Many will fondly remember the circus that was on display in the museum’s main lobby for many years. It became almost synonymous with the Elliott Museum and achieved almost “rock star status” with the community.

The balance of this extraordinary exhibition will utilize vintage pieces from the museum’s collection to explore “play”. It is how we play and what we play that plays a pivotal role in our development and will help shape our lives as adults.  Displays awash with color and unique lighting effects will result in a stunning and thought provoking exhibition.  There will also be “hands on” play areas for children to imagine, create and enjoy.

Explore “fantasy play” with dolls, incredibly detailed dollhouses, and model planes, trains and cars. Remember “construction play” with erector sets, blocks and Legos. See how “playing with rules” as with baseball, croquet, and board games helped prepare us for later life. And it was “active play”that helped us develop physically and fostered comraderie.
In a time when we’re worried about our jobs and providing for our families and the general economic outlook is dire, we wistfully think of the “good old days” and long for our carefree childhood.  We remember the games we played. We remember the toys we shared with friends and those that occupied our imaginations. The Elliott Museum’s “A Circus of Small Wonders” opens on June 13th and runs through September 13th. Come and remember. Come and enjoy. Come and relive a simpler time….and this time you can share the memories and the wonder with your children.  There will be a “members only” preview on Friday evening, June 12th. If you would like to be invited to this reception, attend lectures and other presentations free of charge, have free admission to the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge and enjoy discounts at our gift shops, become a member of the Historical Society.
