Atlanta, GA stands on the site of an Indian village called Standing Peachtree. It was sold to white settlers by the Cherokee and Creek Indians in 1822. The city went through several name changes including "Terminus", "Marthasville," and finally, "Atlantica-Pacifica" for the railroad – which was soon shortened to "Atlanta." It was officially incorporated in 1847.
An important supply hub, Atlanta was the site of several major Civil War battles. In 1864, it withstood a 4 month siege by Union General William T. Sherman, but eventually fell and was burned to the ground on his march south.
Atlanta provided much of the setting for the best-selling novel, Gone With the Wind (written by Atlanta native, Margaret Mitchell). The 1939 movie version starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh had its premiere in the city. In the 1960s, Atlanta was a focal point for the civil rights movement, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The city is home to Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, Home Depot and UPS; in fact, it ranks third behind New York and Houston in the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered within city limits. Atlanta is also home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest.
Between 2000 and 2006, Atlanta’s population grew by some 20%, making it the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the U.S. Despite this boom, the EPA has commended the city for its many "green" practices and policies.
Famous people from the Atlanta area include former presidents Jimmy Carter and Woodrow Wilson, baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, the NBA’s Walt Frazier, Oliver Hardy of "Laurel & Hardy", director Spike Lee, actresses Julia Roberts and Holly Hunter, "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest and media mogul Ted Turner.
