1) Study the classified section. What categories are available? Are bold graphics allowed? Color? Boxes around the copy? These can all make you stand out.

2) Write a winning headline. Start by brainstorming about the benefits of your item or service; which one is most likely to attract attention? If a benefit isn’t leaping to mind, focus on the problem or need of your prospects, and how you can solve it.

3) With headlines, shorter is better. Try to keep it to six words or less. Then print it in bold type or all capital letters to get maximum attention.

4) Your message is key. Start by writing a complete message about the benefits, then edit it down – way down. Cut out all unnecessary words and full sentences, as if you were sending a telegram. Space is everything in a classified ad, so use abbreviations(“P.O. Box” versus “Post Office Box”). Don’t forget to list any special offers (“free report”), calls to action and of course, contact information.
