What's in a brushstroke? This exhibition presents 77 hanging scrolls, fan paintings, albums, poem cards, and ceramics as part of an examination of the development of the art of writing during Japan's early modern period. In the works communicate the traditional belief that the freedom of the brush reveals personality and allows for individual expression, and also provide a rare glimpse into the culture that held calligraphy in such high esteem.
Organized by the University of Richmond Museums and curated by Richmond's Tucker-Boatwright Professor of Humanities Stephen Addiss.
