Catalan Artist Agustí Puig’s Figurative Work
Ketchum, ID -- Gallery DeNovo presents Human Traces, a selection of powerful thick figurative paintings, sculpture and etchings by Catalan artist, Agustí Puig.
Agustí, born in Sabadell, with an established career in Spain has successfully shown his work throughout Europe and at esteemed international art fairs including a recent Private Foundation show, Espai Volart 2, at Vila Casas in Barcelona and Gallery DeNovo’s presentation at Art Chicago in May. Agusti’s work is easily recognizable based on his continuous line figures and thick, pigment that is literally poured onto the surface from his earthy palette of ochre, brilliant white, fiery red, terracotta, ash, charcoal.
This exhibition, Human Traces, features many of Agusti’s abstracted figures created with simple continuous line and thickly, poured –on and splashed-on specially blended pigment. A feature painting, “La Protectora II” measures 10 ft in length and 6 ft tall and outlines the forms of three women created from chunky paint that is perhaps 2 inches in depth. The center figures’ curvaceous white outline is the “protector” of the other two headless female figures on each side. This particular painting was one that was originally created for Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina’s Barcelona”, but was not used on set. Other pieces in the exhibition include many other large, medium, and small scale paintings on canvas, paper and board, etchings, and for the first time bronze works created from unique clay figures that mimic the style of Agusti’s childlike figure created with a profiled head and legs with no body.
Gallery DeNovo continues to be the only gallery to represent and promote Agusti’s work throughout America. “The response has been incredible. We knew that Agustí was extremely talented, but the added notoriety that came with the movie, was incredible. We have calls coming in from all over the US inquiring about the paintings people saw in the movie. We are so excited to have the incredible relationship with Agustí and look forward to continually promoting his work in Sun Valley, throughout the U.S. and other international art fairs” states Robin Reiners.
Agusti works from a converted textile factory now three story studio with 18+ foot ceilings and beautiful mediteranian light. The floor and the artist himself become crusted in paint as he loses himself in the energy of the creation of his work. His studio is where it all happens, it affords him the ability to produce many works at once including some that are very grand in scale.
