Harlan Hall, built in 1871 as a one-story frame building, housed a livery stable, In 1872 this frame structure was replaced with a brick two-story building housing the livery stable on the first floor with the second floor and balcony serving as an opera house. A completely equipped work¬ing theater with a stage for theatrical per¬formances was to serve Marshall as a social, intellectual and cultural development center. Through the years... The building has served as home to many things — a skating rink, an International truck and tractor dealership, a manufac¬turing operation making crystals (good for all ailments), the home of the local Moose organization, a paint company and a firm that built hog houses — among other uses. What it will become... This fine historical building will be utilized as a community center. The first floor will house the Peace Meal Program and related activities for seniors along with an area for young people. The second floor will serve as a welcoming center for the National Road (U.S. Route 40) and its Interpretative Center as well as space for some Marshall artifacts, Businesses, civic organizations, in¬dividuals and groups will be able to lease the facility to hold social and fund-raising events. Replacing the long-ago removed stage on the second floor will enable the community to host quality entertainment.
