We did some railfanning as well, despite the damp, rainy day. 0:00-:33 Oakland, IL. Here the ex-NKP "Cloverleaf" line crossed the ex-PRR branch line from Farrington to Decatur. From 1976 to 1981, the PRR was operated from Paris to Decatur by the Wabash Valley, and from 1981 to 1985, the Prairie Central short line. The line abandoned in 1985, but the NKP-style signals from the junction remain. The NKP has been operated by the Eastern Illinois Railroad since 1991, and Indiana Hi-Rail before that. 0:33- 1:19 Metcalf-, IL- This is where the Eastern Illinois Railroad stops. Here, it crosses CSX's ex-B&O branch to Decatur. Both railroads still have their predecessor signals standing at the junction. Note the odd signal at the connecting track. The EI RR ends about a mile to the north. 1:20-1:50- Chrisman, IL- Here the B&O branch from Decatur to Hillsdale crosses Conrail's ex-NYC "Egyptian" Line that ran from Danville to Cairo. At the time these scenes were filmed, this line from Paris to Danville was up for abandonment by CSX pending sale from the Conrail break-up. CSX withdrew this notice shortly thereafter, and now uses this route to route traffic from Terre Haute up to Chrisman to gain access to the Decatur branch. They also might use it as a detour route from the Evansville line. 1:51-2:43 Ridge Farm, IL- Here the ex-NYC Paris-Danville line once crossed the N&W "Cloverleaf." The N&W line ... |
