About Us
In August 1938, a fund drive, spearheaded by the Beechmont Civic Club, raised monies for construction and purchase of land for our library by selling certificates of ownership, in units of square inches. When the cornerstone was laid on March 1, 1939, a copy of the check, redeeming those square inch purchases, was placed in a box within the cornerstone. At the library's dedication, Mr. O. E. Hoffman, president of the Beechmont Civic Club, was quoted as saying, "It will be more than just a library. It will be a real community, serving citizens in the entire area south of the University of Louisville." And indeed, this lovely Carnegie building has served as a gathering point for many community groups as well as a neighborhood library for over sixty years.
