A lovely path. lined with flowering plantings, leads visitors along the Stations of the Cross to the main entrance gates of the cemetery. Mother Catherine Spalding (1793-1858), the first superior of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, is buried here. An interesting Rosary Shrine, built by Belgian immigrants, is located near the cemetery grounds. Nazareth, located 2 miles north of Bardstown, KY, is the home of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, which was founded 1812. The property includes magnificent architecture such as the historic St. Vincent de Paul Church (circa 1858), the Motherhouse, and buildings of the former Nazareth Academy and Nazareth College. There is a walking path and picturesque lakes, including the Lake of the Immaculate Conception with a large marble statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Visitor Center and a Heritage Hall are open to the public. The background music is Old Hundredth.

The community was established in 1812 and moved to the present location, 2 miles north of Bardstown, KY, in 1822. The featured structures include the SCN motherhouse (1825), St. Vincent de Paul church (1854), O'Connell Hall, Nazareth Village I (formerly the Nazareth Academy/Nazareth Academy and Benevolent Society/Nazareth College), Guest House (formerly the priest's house), Carrico Hall, the Rosary Building, Nativity Hall, and other buildings on the property. A map of the beautiful campus is available at www.scnfamily.org The chapel of St. Vincent de Paul church (1854) was designed by William Keeley, a native of County Tipperary Ireland, who was one of the finest architects in 19th century America. The church was built from materials on the Nazareth grounds with Indiana limestone on the exterior. Kelley also designed the Cathedral of the Assumption (1852) in Louisville, KY and the Abbey Church of Gethsamani in Kentucky. Background music is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a hymn sung at a service prior to the blessing of the statue in the Lake of the Immaculate Conception on the grounds of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Several books on the history of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are available, including a recent book (2006) by Mary Ellen Doyle, SCN, and a book written by Anna Blanche McGill (1917) which is now available online in digital format.

It was an enjoyable experience for those involved as Sisters in both locations got to say hello to each other while gathered in their respective dining rooms for lunch.
