Ambdós significats són vàlids por a explicar la festa, ja que, al volant de l'any 1346, el lloc on es va edificar el convent contesà dels franciscans estava ocupat per una ermita gòtica dedicada a Sant Sebastià, aleshores en el camí d'Alcoi, situat a la part oriental del barranc de l'Alberri. Aquest lloc fou elegit per edificar-hi el monestir el 1561. Va ser de Ximén Pérez de Corella, sisè comte de Cocentaina, qui va demanar-ho a l'ordre franciscana, petició que va ser acceptada pel segon ministre provincial de València, el pare José Vicent, fill de Bocairent. Per voluntat expressa de Ximén Pérez de Corella, es va edificar el convent franciscà sota l'advocació de Sant Sebastià. Així, la primera pedra del convent la va posar el fill de Ximén, Jerònim Sebastià de Corella i Mendoza. La construcció del convent, però, no va adquirir el ritme que s'esperava i per això la comunitat destinada va haver d'allotjar-se a l'ermitori de Santa Bàrbara, un habitacle amb moltes incomoditats.
