Boston, MA---On June 25th, the office of State Senator Robert O’Leary held a reception honoring new art pieces on display in his office from twenty one Cape Cod high school student artists. These students were part of the School to Careers Internship Program that is sponsored by the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board. This is the third year that Senator O’Leary’s office has held a School to Careers art show.

This program places students in artists’ studios for 8 weeks. Students produce pieces for their portfolios as well as help the artists within their studios. Students receive firsthand knowledge of what it takes to be an artist. Some of the conversations they have are; How do you market your work, price the piece and where do you get your raw materials from?

“There is more to the Cape and Islands than beaches,” said Senator O’Leary (D-Barnstable). “It is an area famous for its arts.  I welcome these high school students who are connected through a partnership with professionals.  They can get a real sense of what is in store for them and I am delighted to have such beautiful art in my office and in the State House.”

Prior to the reception in Senator O’Leary’s office, the students along with their families, took a tour of the State House, met with Senate President Therese Murray and were presented to the Senate during a formal session where they received a standing ovation from the members.

“We’re always happy to support our students from the Cape and promote the arts,” Senate President Therese Murray said. “Senator O’Leary’s reception at the State House was the perfect opportunity to recognize the Schools to Careers program and our student artists. We feel quite honored to have their work on display even for just a little while.”

The art work will hang in Senator O’Leary’s office from June until the middle of September and is open for public viewing during normal business house.
