Gallery Talk Sunday, July 13, 3 p.m.

The Danforth Museum of Art is pleased to present Nothing Twice, an exhibition of paintings from artist Cora Roth.  Her work will be on view from July 2 - August 3, 2008 in the Swartz Gallery as part of the New England Current Series.  The artist will speak about her work on Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m.

Nothing Twice, the newest installment our New England Currents, includes a series of recent paintings by Cora Roth. The title of this exhibition is a reference to a Louise Glück poem, which reads, “For all the repetition, nothing happened twice.” Roth’s canvases appear to be synthetic pieces of woven tapestry. However, the magic begins when one looks closely at the artist’s caress of each “strand” of thick paint. The wet and juicy surfaces belie an insistence on the hand of the artist and an expressive love of paint.

Almost monochromatic, the artist employs the minimalist concepts of the reduction of color and form and the use of the grid. However, these are only the underpinnings. She then rejoices in the act of painting, squeezing paint from the tube directly onto the canvas, conducting color as if it were a symphony.

About the Artist
Before wielding a paint brush, Cora Roth’s instrument of choice was her violin. She played with the New York All-City High School Orchestra before majoring in music at Brooklyn College where she earned her BA in 1960. Her next love was art and she graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1989. Ever since, she has had solo exhibitions at the Simmons College Trustman Art Gallery, Boston’s Levinson Kane Gallery and Kidder Smith Gallery, and O. K. Harris Works of Art in New York City. She was also featured at the Rose Art Museum and at the Montserrat College of Art Gallery.

The artist uses her musical background to conduct scores of painterly harmonies. The textures of her almost square surfaces drip, droop and undulate exhibiting her love of the medium of paint.
