The mission that Jesus gave us is broken into two parts. First, our mission is to encounter God. He told them to go the mountain where he would meet them. God, of course, is everywhere. He is not limited to a mountain or a building. Yet, all throughout time, He has chosen to make His presence particularly evident at various locations. For Jacob, it was Bethel. For Moses, it was Mt. Sinai. For the Old Testament saints, it was the tabernacle and the temple. For us as believers in Jesus today, the place of His presence is the church. God is calling us to come meet with Him weekly at His church. Our mission is to encounter Him. What a marvelous and wonderful calling.

The second part of the mission is to change lives now and forever. I’m sure the disciples would have loved to spend the rest of their lives on the mountain with Jesus. There is nothing like the mountaintop of encountering God. In fact, someday that’s exactly what we will experience. Heaven is the opportunity to worship in His presence for all eternity. But for now, there is work to be done. Not everybody knows this God. It is our job to take the message of Jesus and the salvation He has provided to them. We are called to make disciples of all nations. That is also part of our mission. We want to change nonbelievers into fully devoted disciples of Jesus.
