A gripping and supremely steamy thriller that’s attracted moviemakers ever since James M. Cain first wrote it, The Postman Always Rings Twice has been reinterpreted by talented directors in America, Italy and China, and now Germany’s Christian Petzold has spun one of the most spellbinding variations of them all. Returning from his mother’s funeral in the former East Germany, the penniless, jobless Thomas pulls over to stop at a roadside accident. There he meets and befriends Ali, a middle-aged Turk who’s been dangerously driving under the influence and consequently offers to employ Thomas as a driver. The tone of their new friendship changes, however, just as soon as Thomas meets Laura, Ali’s highly attractive, none-too-satisfied wife. For a story that at first glance seems as purely American as The Postman Always Rings Twice, it’s fascinating to see how other cultures have so ingeniously adapted it by reimagining the story in subtle ways – ways that, as Petzold does so mesmerizingly here, keep us tantalizingly unsure of the fates that these three characters will either encounter or deserve, or both.
