Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest geniuses the world has ever known. And while many people are familiar with da Vinci, the artist, few realize that he was an even more prolific inventor. On Oct. 4, 2008 the Detroit Science Center will present da Vinci’s inventions, and more, when it opens the internationally acclaimed exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius

More than 500 years ago, da Vinci designed flying machines, robots, submarines, underwater breathing gear and solar-powered industries; and laid most of the groundwork for the artificial heart valve. In Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius, visitors will
see 60 models of da Vinci's famous machines, inventions and designs based on ancient codices, including a hang glider, helicopter, military tank and more.

Visitors will be able to push, pull, crank and interact with these exhibits for a greater understanding of the math, engineering and physics principles behind them. Through these large-scale models of his work, computer-animated models of his discoveries, dramatic film highlights of his life and examples of “modern-day da Vincis,” the exhibit presents the genius of Leonardo da Vinci as few have ever seen it.

Explore the myths and legends surrounding da Vinci’s life and consider how his legacy inspires and challenges us today – only at
the Detroit Science Center!
