St. Luke's lovingly accepts every seeker of God and encourages all to walk with the spirit through worship, fellowship, prayer, and service

The efforts of the past and of the present serve and support the mission of St. Luke's: "... to celebrate Christ's Love; enter our diverse community; get into the heart of it."

We, the community of St. Luke's, gather together on Sunday mornings to celebrate Holy Eucharist. We come as God's people to remember his love for us in Jesus Christ to be nurtured in his ways and to be empowered to serve the world in his name. We know that God has a purpose for each of us and has given us gifts of ministry so that we can make a difference in the world.

Our history begins a little over eighty years ago. The expansion of the automobile industry brought a growing tide of people to the village of Ferndale seeking homes "in the country." In March of 1920 the Martin, Shader and McIntyre families initiated the effort for diocesan approval to form a mission. And thus began services with Archdeacon Charles Ramsay holding services in a private home. Soon services were moved to a the basement of the former Board of Education building on Nine Mile Road, just east of Woodward. Service was held by lay readers, with assistance by the Rector of St. John's, Royal Oak. The mission was placed under the supervision of St. Joseph's Church in Detroit, and the Men's Club of that parish. The Men's Club provided the materials for the people of St. Luke's to build their own Church building. In May, 1923, what is now Washington Hall, was completed, and services began there under the first Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. William M. Washington. By January 1924 he Diocesan convention had accepted St. Luke's as an Organized Mission and the formal relationship with St. Joseph's came to an end.

Our life together is centered in the worship of God. All who are committed to Jesus Christ are invited to join us in receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion. Visitors and newcomers are welcome to join us in the joy of serving Christ, and in furthering the spread of God's Good News.

If you do not have a Christian community to call your own, please consider St. Luke's. We would love to have you join us in the fellowship of God.
